Rugged styling and rugged engineering are different things. Here is how to tell them apart before you buy.
IP68 means the watch passed a specific laboratory test for dust ingress and immersion at a defined depth and duration, on a new device. It is excellent protection against rain, dust, sweat and an accidental dunking. It is not a swimming rating, and it says nothing about hot showers, where heat expands seals. The IEC explanation of IP ratings spells out each digit.
Almost nobody breaks a watch body. What fails is a scratched or cracked screen and a parted strap lug. A raised bezel standing proud of the glass prevents most screen damage, so check that edge before you judge a watch by its thickness. Our rugged buying guide covers what to look for.
Every water rating is measured on a new watch. Gaskets harden over years and a knock to a button can break a seal invisibly. Treat an older rugged watch more carefully than the box implies — this is true of every brand.
A tough watch that dies on day two is not much use on a long weekend. Fifteen days is the design target here; heavy display use, calls and GPS all draw it down. See what actually drains a watch and what cold weather costs.
Heart rate is the reliable figure. Blood-pressure and SpO2 estimates are optical and move with fit, motion and circulation — trends against your own baseline, not measurements. The American Heart Association target heart rate guide has the ranges, and the CDC activity guidelines the weekly targets.

Three things, and none of them is how thick it looks. First, a bezel that sits proud of the glass, because a scratched or cracked screen is how most watches actually die. Second, sealed buttons and a stated ingress rating such as IP68, so you know what was tested rather than guessing. Third, strap lugs and pins that will not part company with the case. Everything else is styling.
Not reliably. IP68 covers immersion under specific static test conditions, but swimming involves moving through water, which generates considerably more pressure than the test simulates, and hot showers add heat that degrades seals. Treat IP68 as very good protection against rain, dust, sweat and accidental submersion. If you want to swim with a watch, look for an ATM rating instead.
Continuous 24/7 heart-rate monitoring plus daily activity and multi-sport tracking, all synced to the free Da Fit app. Like all wellness wearables it is not a medical device.
